Don't worry about anthrax, bombs, or terrorists.
The most dangerous thing in Sudbury is city council!
I AM TIRED OF BEING LIED TO!
It seems as if the operating system for 21st century politicians is "Tell the people
what they want to hear and then ignore them."
Sudbury taxpayers were and are being lied to about hospital restructuring, regional
restructuring, hydro rates and billing, water/sewer/property taxes, mega-project deals
and funding, and any number of other city council driven decisions.
Let's start with a really simple concept. All city councilors elected said they were
qualified to run this "grand" city they created but, every time a decision has to be made,
council hires consultants to advise them on what to do. Obviously they were not stating
the truth. Even when "caught between a rock and a hard place" when it came to the tragic
fire in Hanmer, they hired consultants to defend them. All of this at great expense to
taxpayers. Gary Polano, ex CEO of Sudbury, got upwards of $120,000/year to "advise" the
Mayor in 2001.
Remember George Lund stating that having three hospitals was inefficient and, in the very
beginning, $80 million would create one modern efficient medical center that we could all
be proud of. That was a 25% solution because it now will cost at least 4 times as much.
The same person, George Lund, said regional restructuring would save millions and that
the process would be transparent. He was misleading us again. If it wasn't for Rule-Gate,
(Jim Rule quits and receives $220,000 as a good-by perk), we wouldn't know that city
managers were hired for three years and would receive an extra 2 years pay as a perk. As
for the millions that would be saved, your last tax bill let you know that wasn't true either.
Sudbury Hydro Inc., a company owned by us, the Sudbury taxpayers, went through
"growing pains" during deregulation and billing was delayed for two months. I talked to
Doug Reeves, CEO, the first week of July and he assured me that there would be no
"catch-up" billing because it could place an unreasonable burden on users. When I got my
double hydro bill last month I realized I had been lied to once more. By the way, if you
can't pay the bill, the city charges 10% interest on late payments. Nice eh!
When I get my water bill (consumption $109/service charge "user fee" $53/waste -water
tax $188), I realize that I was mislead once again. The 115% waste-water tax was going
to be reflected as a reduction in my property taxes. Not true!
In the last several years council promoted/helped COSCO and Home Depot locate in the east
end of town. They said it would be a great asset to this town. Details of the deals and
the revenues received for the land sold to them was one of the best kept secrets in town.
(I can't find out if those figures were ever released to the public). Now they say small
businesses are the backbone of this city. This just seems to be a compound lie.
No one of these "projects" has turned out the way council said they would. Cost overruns
seem to be a standard operating procedure and the only one who is held accountable is the
taxpayer. This is not acceptable. Add up all these falsehoods and it amounts to millions
and millions of dollars spent without any controls what so ever. This is not democracy.
When this council realizes that they all work for us and quit using Sudbury as a stepping
stone for higher political aspirations... When council quits bragging about all the great
things they have done for us and realizes that real people are hurting because of their
actions and their misguided notions that they are the only ones that are right... maybe,
just maybe, we will get some decent representation!
"There is no worse tyranny than to force a person to accept (pay for) what he does not
want merely because you think it would be good for him" - Robert A. Heinlein.
